Description

The instant #1 New York Times bestseller

"An unforgettable—and Hollywood-bound—new thriller... A mix of Hitchcockian suspense, Agatha Christie plotting, and Greek tragedy."
Entertainment Weekly

The Silent Patient is a shocking psychological thriller of a woman’s act of violence against her husband—and of the therapist obsessed with uncovering her motive.

Alicia Berenson’s life is seemingly perfect. A famous painter married to an in-demand fashion photographer, she lives in a grand house with big windows overlooking a park in one of London’s most desirable areas. One evening her husband Gabriel returns home late from a fashion shoot, and Alicia shoots him five times in the face, and then never speaks another word.

Alicia’s refusal to talk, or give any kind of explanation, turns a domestic tragedy into something far grander, a mystery that captures the public imagination and casts Alicia into notoriety. The price of her art skyrockets, and she, the silent patient, is hidden away from the tabloids and spotlight at the Grove, a secure forensic unit in North London.

Theo Faber is a criminal psychotherapist who has waited a long time for the opportunity to work with Alicia. His determination to get her to talk and unravel the mystery of why she shot her husband takes him down a twisting path into his own motivations—a search for the truth that threatens to consume him....

Had trouble putting this book down to go prepare meals or go to sleep! I kept saying “ one more chapter”: then that next chapter grabbed me too. Well done.

Update: I did read it again. Slower this time. I do acknowledge that he only sees Alicia once a day but his detective work between Alicia and Kathy took up a lot of time too, so how did he spend the rest of his day? Guess that doesn’t matter. Still a great read. My only other criticism is the diary. A diary isn’t typically written so verbatim, or is it? Very realistic story-telling for a diary. Perhaps this diary could have been told from a different POV. Like Alicia’s version instead of a diary. I don’t know. I still give it four stars. Not many books I read twice, that’s for sure!!! I need to read it again. And look for the signals or foreshadowing. Great book club read. There were some pieces of information I’d have like answered, without the use of filler - like how Theo didn’t have any other patients and was able to secure Alicia as his only patient, how he was able to continue detective work after being found out, etc. All in all, it was a good story and kept me turning pages... perhaps wanting answers ...only to be surprised at the ending!!

My sister bought this book and I told her I’d read it with her. Well, I finished it before her. Every page made me need more. I still need more. Such an incredible story. Definitely a first when it comes to originality. ***** five stars all around!
